Finely groomed, adorned with small and large bells and decorated with ribbons, cattle have always marched across the village square of Laion/Lajen on Rosary Sunday every October. The summerretreat for cattle, which spend the summer on high Alpine pastures such as Rasciesa/Raschötz or Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm, ends with the traditional cattle drive. In the past it was only the cows of large farmers such as those of the Moar, Tschutscher, Zehtner and Ingram farms which were driven across the square, with the most beautiful cow, the wreath cow with her large headdress, elaborately woven from twigs, flowers, grass and ribbons, at their head. Nowadays also sheep, goats and horses who have grazed on the Alpine pastures over the summer take part in the cattle drive. Bands perform traditional music¨and the folkloristic “Goaslschnöller“ receive the cattle, while farmers demonstrate their threshing skills and all give thanks with a feast that the cattle have survived the summer well. In addition, traditional farm delicacies are on offer.
