What about a leisurely hike through the autumn forests up to the Alpine pastures, to sample the delights of the local cuisine? This guided weekly hike through the tranquil holiday region of Laion/Lajen takes place on Wednesdays, from 11 September – 30 October. Following the gourmet trails, participants familiarise themselves with the landscape and culinary traditions of the Dolomites. There are three different route options to choose from: one leads over the Sentiero della Posta/Poststeig Trail to Ortisei/St. Ulrich, returning by bus back to Laion; the second takes you to Ortisei, then to Rasciesa/Raschötz on the modern funicular railcar and along the trail circuit back to Laion. The third option is the hike from Laion to the Unterpulghütte Refuge above Ceves/Tschöfas. The idea is to stop at different mountain refuges along the way to try the regional specialities and each shelter specialises in something different. For example, there’s venison on the menu at the Pedrutsch Tavern, while at the Ramitzler Schwaige Hut, Graukas cheese platters are the highlight. At the Unterpulghütte Hut, they specialise in various dumpling recipes. Thirsty hikers will be glad to quench their thirst with a free beer from Monpiër de Gherdeina, the original craft brewery in the Dolomites.
